History
History of Billy Mills Middle School
Known today as Billy Mills Middle School, South Junior High was originally established in 1968 and moved into a new facility in 2007. The land upon which this new facility stood, and where BMMS still stands today, was donated by Haskell Indian Nations University. South Junior High was officially renamed Billy Mills Middle School in 2018-2019 to honor Billy Mills, Oglala Lakota (Sioux), an Olympic gold medalist and alumnus of the nearby University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University. Home of the Cougars, Billy Mills Middle School is a school rich in community, tradition, and school spirit. BMMS is focused on fostering an inclusive learning community and providing student-centered instruction.
