BILLY MILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL
HOME OF THE COUGARS
BLACK AND GOLD
The school colors of Billy Mills Middle School are Black and Gold. These colors aren't just a stylish fashion statement, however. Our use of Black pays homage to the Red and Black color scheme belonging to our friends at Lawrence High School. Meanwhile, our Gold celebrates another cherished friendship, honoring the iconic Purple and Gold of Haskell Indian Nations University. Billy Mills Middle School, Broken Arrow Elementary, and Broken Arrow Park are all located on land which was once a part of Haskell. The land was given to Lawrence Public Schools and the City of Lawrence by the Department of the Interior. So, we adopted our Gold in recognition of Haskell's foundational role in our school's history.
THE COUGAR
Billy Mills Middle School logo.
The Cougar, through its many variations over the decades, has always been the beloved mascot of Billy Mills (formerly South Junior High School). Cougars, also referred to as Pumas, Catamounts, Mountain Lions, and Panthers, were once considered native to Kansas prior to the late 19th century. Although in recent years, sightings have been sparse.
The Cougar represents many ideas to different people. But here at BMMS, we connect with its strength, agility, grace, valor, adaptability, balance, patience, perseverance, awareness, and intuition, among other virtues.
